ASOJ Condemns Arbitrary Arrest of Journalist Anisa Ahmed in Mogadishu
According to ASOJ, Anisa Ahmed is currently being detained at the Dayniile District Police Station after she was unexpectedly abducted from the Waabari District Police Station, where she had gone to meet the district police commander.
ASOJ said the incident highlights a growing trend of threats and harassment against Somali journalists, warning that such actions put press freedom and the safety of reporters at grave risk.
"This act constitutes a clear threat, intimidation, and violation of freedom of expression and press freedom. It also highlights the growing danger to the safety and independence of Somali journalists,” ASOJ stated.
The organization has called on the Federal Government of Somalia and the Benadir Regional Administration to take immediate action to secure the unconditional release of Anisa Ahmed and to ensure that journalists across Somalia are not subjected to arbitrary arrests, harassment, or intimidation.
ASOJ also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with human rights organizations and international press freedom advocacy groups to investigate the case and ensure justice.
The arrest of Anisa Ahmed comes amid a climate of increasing pressure on independent media in Somalia, where journalists often face threats, arbitrary detention, and restrictions while carrying out their professional duties.
